The History of St John's

St John’s playgroup was opened in 1970 and provided care for children aged 2-5yrs for morning sessions only. In May 2009 it was taken over by the church and changed it’s name to become St John’s Preschool and was registered with OFSTED, with a governing body given the responsibility of running the preschool. It was officially opened by Father Marc on 13th July. It continued to provide care for children during the mornings only until later when the decision was made to increase to full day sessions to keep the preschool viable.

The preschool continues to provide care and a nurturing space for children aged 2-5 years old and continues to have a visible presence in the community with the children engaging in experiences with other local settings including care homes and local allotments.

In 2025 we were very proud to be awarded Outstanding by OFSTED and continue to provide a curriculum that nurtures children’s individuality using creativity and an environment that is fluid and meets the needs of all the children and families that attend.

In November 2025 we embarked on a journey to develop the preschool even further and joined the Curiosity Approach accreditation. This is taking the preschool on a journey of discovery into a slower pace of life that notices the children and their development. We continue to evolve and provide opportunities for the children to discover more about themselves each day by offering a rich variety of experiences that provoke awe and wonder.
